Hovhannes Toumanian (1869-1923)
A writer of universal appeal, Toumanian is “the poet of all Armenians.” His poems and childrens’ tales with their classic simplicity and depth are intelligible to people of every age, nationality and time. Two of his best-known poems, “Anoush” and “Almast” have been used as opera librettos. His version of the epic “David of Sasoun” is considered the best.

Hovhannes Toumanian (1869-1923)

In The Mountains Of Armenia

Dark is our journey, somber is our journey,
And in that infinite night,
Without any light,
We have climbed upwards for centuries
In the mountains of Armenia,
In the mountains of despair.
We have carried our priceless treasures,
Treasures vast as the sea,
That in ancient days
Our unfathomable souls conceived
In the mountains of Armenia,
In the highlands of Armenia.
But too many times, from the blazing desert,
The savage hordes,
Again and again,
Came and struck our noble caravan,
In the mountains of Armenia,
In the mountains of blood.
Yet, our caravan in disarray, terrified,
Plundered, massacred
And scattered,
Bears its countless wounds
In the mountains of Armenia,
In the mountains of mourning.
And our longing eyes gaze
At the distant stars,
At the end of the skies,
Hoping that bright morning will return
Over the mountains of Armenia,
Over the green mountains.

The Armenian Poets in Song
Les Poètes Arméniens en Chansons

Hayeren Several years ago, the Tekeyan Cultural Association had a celebration in New York City, honoring the 75th anniversary of the Armenian writer and poet Khachik Dashtents. I took part in the evening, interpreting two songs that I wrote using the lyrics of his poems. The text of one of Hayerenthese songs, Armenian, which I adapted into the form of an anthem, is included in all handbooks of Armenian literature published in the Diaspora. The audience greeted the song with great enthusiasm. I believe there were two reasons for this. In the first place, its message exhorts students to speak Armenian in the countries where it is threatened with disappearance; and in the second place, I sang it with a little choir of young girls who presumably have gotten the message...
