BIRD SOUL
There is a bird
Which flies freely in the air
Soars and floats up– at times tempered, at times unbridled
When it grows tired it perches on a branch
Then jumps takes wing and elevates
Like hunted and trance to the distant hights
And the heart beats with anxious throbs
As if it will burst and strike the cage pressing its chest
That distant cage
Which does not exist
There is a cage
Which is neither gold nor silver
Neither glass nor iron
Made of neither wood nor rope
Not suspended from anywhere
Neither on a rod nor stand
But in this cage
There is a bird– and there is none
It hurls itself against the walls
Suffers, anguishes, emaciates
And sobs with grief
In a cage which does not exist...
Just a song, hidden within
It rages discontentedly, trembles with passion
Yet no one listens. |

table

The Armenian Poets in Song
Les Poètes Arméniens en Chansons
Several years ago, the Tekeyan Cultural Association
had a celebration in New York City, honoring the
75th anniversary of the Armenian writer and poet
Khachik Dashtents. I took part in the evening,
interpreting two songs that I wrote using the
lyrics of his poems. The text of one of these
songs, Armenian, which I adapted into the form
of an anthem, is included in all handbooks of
Armenian literature published in the Diaspora.
The audience greeted the song with great enthusiasm.
I believe there were two reasons for this. In
the first place, its message exhorts students
to speak Armenian in the countries where it is
threatened with disappearance; and in the second
place, I sang it with a little choir of young
girls who presumably have gotten the message...
