CHESTNUT POEM
You didn’t meet me
Though I had filled my pockets
With hot-hot chestnuts
So we could sit somewhere
And eat them together
A chestnut for me–a chestnut for you
You didn’t meet me
Though I carried on my shoulder
A pair of rifles and enough cartridges
To go hunting together for rabbits
A rabbit for me–a rabbit for you
You didn’t meet me
Though I had such things in my head
To tell you
I could tell you this–you could tell me that
We could laugh together
Me, a clown–you, a clown
You didn’t meet me
The chestnuts have chilled
And the rabbits free and fearless
Gambol in the meadow
And all that we had to tell each other
Fled like shy birds
A swallow here–a swallow there

POÈME MARRON
On ne s’est pas croisé -
Pourtant j’avais rempli mes poches
rie ensemble

The Armenian Poets in Song
Les Poètes Arméniens en Chansons
Several years ago, the Tekeyan Cultural Association
had a celebration in New York City, honoring the
75th anniversary of the Armenian writer and poet
Khachik Dashtents. I took part in the evening,
interpreting two songs that I wrote using the
lyrics of his poems. The text of one of these
songs, Armenian, which I adapted into the form
of an anthem, is included in all handbooks of
Armenian literature published in the Diaspora.
The audience greeted the song with great enthusiasm.
I believe there were two reasons for this. In
the first place, its message exhorts students
to speak Armenian in the countries where it is
threatened with disappearance; and in the second
place, I sang it with a little choir of young
girls who presumably have gotten the message...

Western Armenian poetry. With his clean style,
he merged unusual imagery with popular humor.
His poetry has influenced many young poets.
Zahrad (Zareh Yaldizchian), 1924
populaire. Plusieurs jeunes poètes ont
été influencés par son écriture.
